Lingaa is an upcoming Indian Tamil language epic action drama film written and directed by K.S. Ravikumar. The film stars Rajinikanth and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles, while Prakash Raj, Sathyaraj and Nithya Menen play supporting roles. The movie has been in production since 2009 and was initially scheduled for release on December 2012 but the date was later postponed to November 2014 before being postponed again until 2015 due to delays caused by mutual issues between the producer and director after the producer invested money from other films into Lingaa. In the movie, Rajinikanth plays a dual role, one of which is a modern day character and the other is a legendary Chola king of the 12th century named Shiva. The film will be made in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. The films budget is 200 crores . A new set worth 25 crores was erected in Alappuzha district. A new song was shot at this location, choreographed by Shobi and filmed by Nirav Shah. The second schedule of the film started on 2 June 2014 at Alleppey beach. It will feature Rajinikanth as Lingaa and Anushka as Mahalaxmi. This movie has been long in the making and in 2014, when both Rajinikanth and Anushka Shetty joined the cast, it was believed that Lingaa would be released in 2015-2016. However, the release date was postponed to November 2014, which was once again changed to early 2015. The film is produced by Arun Pandian through his production company, Kalaignar Movies. In January 2015 it was announced that Lingaa will be delayed further with a release date of February 2016 and producer Arun Pandian declared that he would be "notifying the theatre owners and distributors" by February 19 if there were any problems with distributing the movie theatrically in Tamil Nadu. In March 2015, Nithya Menon was reportedly seen with a special appearance, though this was later denied by the film's crew. In March 2015, the film went on floor in Alleppey and Kanyakumari. In August 2015, it was announced that Rajinikanth had dismissed his entire team and planned to start afresh after the disastrous failure of Kochadaiiyaan in Bollywood. It was announced that the movie would restart with a new cast and crew, though Rajinikanth himself will remain as the lead actor. Rajinikanth's daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth stated that her father was not comfortable with the director or team to be able to work with them. In January 2016, it was reported that Arun Pandian has decided to take legal action against Rajinikanth for dropping out of this project, filing a First Information Report against him for breach of contract.
